Heather Corrine Land, 33, ‘used to cry’ over the thought of never being able to drink again but has now been completely sober for over 21 months. Land, from Arizona in the US, suffers from chronic illness and autoimmune deficiencies and even had to take a significant chunk of time off work to help recover during the nadir of her health.




Alongside her struggles, Land says she abused alcohol for seven years, even describing herself as an ‘everyday drinker.’




Things got so bad that she admits that there were times she didn’t think she would reach her 33rd birthday and said she was ‘depressed.’

August 2026 – When Tara Baggendorf first entered the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council (ADAC) rehabilitation facility in Whitmore Square, Adelaide just under two years ago, she had very little understanding of how addiction could appear in its various forms. As someone who was experiencing alcohol addiction and who had grown up with a mother who faced alcoholism, she hadn’t seen much of the impact of drug addiction.




“That’s very different,” she said. “It’s also a part of life I didn’t really have much of an understanding [about], and I think the withdrawal is very different. So, when you’ve got people [experiencing] different withdrawals in such a small place, that was also very eye-opening.

July 14, 2026 – One week after stopping daily cannabis use, a recovering physician looked at me with obvious frustration, saying, “I thought I’d feel better by now.” He was no longer intoxicated, but he wasn’t sleeping well. Food wasn’t appealing to him. Sex wasn’t enjoyable. His motivation was low,.. his attention wandered, and very few things in his life seemed rewarding. Even though he was a physician, like many patients, he wondered whether he had permanently damaged his brain.




Many patients feel worse during the first weeks of abstinence than they expected. They often assume that since cannabis has left their body, recovery should be complete, but often they have insomnia, irritability, reduced appetite, poor concentration, and diminished pleasure. These symptoms reflect the mismatch between a brain that has adapted to THC and a brain that is now learning to function without it.

Aug. 13, 2026 – The number of people who drink in a way that crosses the line into a medical disorder decreased substantially over a five-year period. The Survey released late last month, found that the share of people 12 and older who qualified for a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder fell to 8.9 percent in 2025 from 10.6 percent in 2021.




The methodology of the annual survey, conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, was updated during the pandemic, so its results cannot be compared to years before 2021, the agency said.




But Katherine Keyes, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University, said the decline was credible, in part because a Gallup survey and a long-running University of Michigan study also show fewer Americans are drinking.

Farrah Blair Bates, 25, has pleaded guilty to chemical endangerment of a child resulting in the death of 2-year-old Ariyah Crawford and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. As part of her plea, Bates’ manslaughter charge was dismissed.




Under the plea agreement, Bates was sentenced to 15 years in prison with two years to actually serve in Jefferson County Community.
