THEY ARE WHAT THEY EAT –

May 23, 2026 – “What we eat early in life really matters.” said Dr. Cristina Cuesta-Martí, the study’s lead author. “Early dietary exposure may leave hidden, long-term effects on feeding behavior that are not immediately visible through weight alone.” A childhood junk-food diet can have a lifelong effect on how the brain regulates appetite … There is, however, some good news. Scientists at APC Microbiome, a leading research center based at UCC, also discovered that the digestive system, with a little help, can reduce the long-term effects of the brain’s cravings.

Modifying the gut microbiota with the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium longum APC1472 can counteract and diminish the permanent brain-diet disruptions. This so-called “psychobiotic,” a natural inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract, has been shown to have a positive influence on mood, stress, and appetite.
HOW MANY FATHERS? –

May 19, 2026 – The idea of drinking during pregnancy sounds like a generational punchline: Someone’s grandmother drank beer to fatten her fetus, another had a nightly martini to get a healthy amount of sleep — presumably unthinkable behavior in today’s America. Yet after precipitous declines in the last 50 years, rates of alcohol use in pregnancy in the U.S. started climbing upward a decade ago. More than 1 in 8 pregnant adults reported drinking in the past month, according to STAT’s analysis of 2024 government data, making alcohol use a more common national phenomenon than gestational diabetes. Of those who drank, a quarter reported having four or more drinks in one sitting — binge drinking — in the prior month.
DISCOVERING YOU’RE PREGNANT AFTER WAKING UP FROM HEROIN-INDUCED COMA –

May 19, 2026 – “16 & Pregnant” star Jessica Danielle Cunningham is opening up about the struggles she faced after appearing on the reality series, including drug addiction, and a shocking second pregnancy. After criticism following her time on the show, Cunningham says she got into drugs.

“I just started partying. And then all of a sudden pills started going into the parties and we’re doing Xanax, and then it was Percocet, and when I was 17, I had somebody shoot me up with heroin,” she recalled, per a clip shared by People magazine.

In 2012, she overdosed on heroin the backseat of a friend’s car.

She woke up from her coma to learn truly surprising news: she was pregnant with her second child with then-boyfriend Jamie.

“Jamie and me, we found out we were going to have another kid. I was pregnant, very early. Four weeks pregnant with my daughter,” she said.
AND EVERYONE ELSE TOO –

May 21, 2026 – For Black American recovering addicts, their cultural relevance carries a lot of extra weight. Some programs hire Black counselors, partner with faith leaders, and also acknowledge the trauma of systemic inequity. These programs have better engagement than clinical methods only. Personalized recovery plans treat addiction by matching care to each person’s history, mental health, and personal goals. Your care providers weigh your medical needs, trauma, family dynamics, employment, and cultural background before any clinical work begins. Tailored care succeeds where generic programs fail, since no two recoveries begin from the same place.
WOODS & FORREST –

May 11, 2026 – Doctors spend years becoming experts in how the body works, how it can break down and how to recognize and treat various illnesses. Their training rarely involves what’s known as “nature-based medicine.”

Dr. Susan Abookire has made it her mission to change that. She’s developed an unusual addition to the courses taught in most medical schools, a voluntary two-hour session that challenges doctors and medical students to embrace the health benefits of spending time outdoors.

On a bright but chilly spring afternoon, she asked 11 doctors and medical students to get comfortable on the grass, beneath towering fir, spruce and pine trees, and close their eyes. These young clinicians had rushed to complete patient charts and brief colleagues at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston so they could cross the street to Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum to experience forest therapy.
SAD BUT TRUE –

May 12, 2026 – “The first thing I’d thought of when I woke up was alcohol,” Panettiere wrote. “I labored with Kaya for 14 hours and was in surgery for three hours after she was born,” she wrote. “My blood wouldn’t clot during my C-section, so doctors had to close the blood vessels in my uterus to prevent me from bleeding out.”

Panettiere felt distant from her newborn—a feeling shared by many women who have difficult childbirth experiences.

“I had always heard that mothers feel an instant rush of love the moment they lay their eyes on their baby, but I felt nothing,“ she wrote. “Kaya was just there, and now I had to figure out how to bond with her. It felt like an insurmountable task, and I was only on the first day.”

When her daughter turned four months, Panettiere recalled feeling like she “needed a drink to function.” She had developed the daily habit while shooting Nashville.

After getting home, she would spend time with her daughter, eat dinner, and call her then-fiancé, Ukrainian former professional boxer and world champion Wladimir Klitschko.

GOOD TO KNOW –

May 8, 2026 – In the summer, the people are out and about, hitting patios, having barbecues, and grabbing drinks after work, so I’ve become a master of the non-alcoholic beverage market (as someone who also loves wine and cocktails).

These aren’t just sodas or juices, they are products that make me feel like I’m a part of a group, and drinks that I reach for all year round! Here are some of my go-tos:
HELP? –

May 4, 2026 – This friend deals with a host of overlapping problems: bad sleep apnea, anxiety, paranoia, and, along with his alcohol dependence, he appears to need regular doses of kratom to function. Due to all these factors, he doesn’t have a job and lives at home with his parents. I’ve read a little (but not much) about how to support a friend in this type of situation, so I know to avoid shaming or scolding him. But I’m starting to worry that pretty much everyone in his life—his family, other friends, and me—is using the same radically gentle strategy.
