JULY 14, 2026 – So Cai, who was 30 and had “never touched a cigarette in my life” started occasionally indulging in “a little social cigarette.” And since that inaugural cig, she’s observed an upswing in smoking in her circles. “It’s the friends I would’ve never expected,” says Cai: “high-functioning, wonderful, successful people.”




Emily Atkin, a friend of mine and author of the climate crisis newsletter Heated, gauges the shift in public sentiment around smoking based on people’s reactions to her electric blue tank top emblazoned with the plea “PLS DO NOT GIVE ME A CIGARETTE NO MATTER WHAT I SAY.”




“It is by far my most attention-grabbing shirt,” she told me. Of course, she dons it to tempt enablers: “I wear it on nights when I know I might have a cigarette.” She’s noticed an uptick in people smoking outside the bars in Philly, where she lives, but it’s not just that: “In a more vibes-based way, I’m feeling less shame about my own desires to potentially want to have a cigarette.”

When I was a child, I remember my dad giving me about one-fourth cup of beer one evening while we were watching TV. I took a sip and wondered, “How could anyone drink this stuff?” I handed it right back. If he was trying to convince me never to drink beer, it certainly worked.




So, what is the relationship between alcohol and our health?




Unfortunately, alcohol of any kind or in any amount does not promote good health.

June 19, 2026 – Cleavotta Morgan said her son, Daejon Morgan, called her every day from his cell at Men’s Central Jail. The 20-year-old inmate would ask her to pass the phone around to different members of the family. She’d often put the receiver up to his dog Hunter’s ear so he could hear the animal’s excitement at the sound of his voice. The family thought of his incarceration as a “blessing,” she said.




“We thought it would be a safe place for him,” Cleavotta Morgan said of her son and the L.A. County jail system. But during a call Oct. 30, 2024, Morgan heard screams. Then an unfamiliar voice came on the line.




“[Daejon] went down,” the man said. “I’m sorry I gotta put the phone down and get help.”




Morgan died in his cell from an overdose caused by fentanyl and heroin, according to an autopsy.




He was one of hundreds of inmates on a wait list to receive medication-assisted treatment for drug addiction, according to two L.A. County Correctional Health Services staff members with knowledge of the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly.

June 19, 2026 – For years, many people believed a glass of wine with dinner might actually be good for you. Just think about all those really old French people drinking wine, living their best life. But a new study says there’s no evidence that any amount of drinking improves your health. Researchers analyzed U.S. health data and found no health benefit from alcohol …at any level of consumption. Instead, they found the risk of death increases even among people who would be considered moderate drinkers.




For example, men who drink around two alcoholic beverages a day, face roughly a 4% lifetime risk of dying from an alcohol-related illness or injury.




The study also found women face a greater risk of alcohol-related liver disease than men at similar drinking levels.




Researchers say younger adults get no health benefits from alcohol at all, with many alcohol-related deaths tied to car crashes, injuries, and violence.




Based on the findings, the authors recommend limiting alcohol intake to NO MORE than ONE DRINK PER DAY for both men and women.
